Snickerpoodles: Homemade Dog Treats

My kids have been invited to a birthday party ... for a dog.  Yep, you read that right.  For a dog!  I'd better be careful how much sarcasm I put in there.  I would have totally done that for my dogs when they were alive.  They were my first babies and I spoiled them rotten.  Here is a picture of Daisy... too cute, right?

So after I was done giggling I knew my kids and I had to make Lulu (that's the birthday dog's name) some homemade cookies.  And when I saw these I knew they were the ones.  I mean really!  Snickerpoodles!  How cute is that?!?!

* 1/2 cup vegetable oil
* 1/2 cup shortening
* 1 cup honey
* 2 eggs
* 3 3/4 cup white flour
* 2 tsp. cream of tartar
* 1 tsp. baking soda
* 1/2 cup corn meal
* 2 tsp. cinnamon

Mix vegetable oil, shortening, honey and egg.  Mix well.  Add flour, soda and cream of tartar.  Knead dough until well mixed.

Shape into 1 inch balls.

Mix the cornmeal and cinnamon together and roll balls to coat.

Place 2 inches apart on a greased cookie sheet and gently press each ball down.  My daughter did this part.  Can you tell?  =o)

Bake in a 400 degree oven for 8 - 10 minutes.

Cool on a wire rack and store in an air tight container.

Cute right?  They look a lot like actual cookies so make sure you label the container =o)  But I guess if you ate one, it wouldn't hurt you.

We can't wait to give them to Lulu. We wrapped them up pretty in a celo bag and tied a ribbon around it. Presentation is everything, right?

What an adorable post. You made me giggle too! I've actually seen birthday party cards or sort of "adoption announcements" at the pet store and questioned whether people actually do those things. I guess they do. Sounds like a cute idea, but honestly nobody I know outside of immediate family are pet people at all.

I'm sure Lulu will love them. I sometimes make homemade cookies for my dogs and think they prefer those to store bought ones. Guess I'm not a good doggie mom since I haven't made any in a long time. I do however have some cute bone shaped cookie cutters.

As for the cookies, as long as you are using fresh ingredients, from what you have listed, a human could eat them. I haven't tried any I've made simply because well, knowing they are for my dogs I can't put them in my mouth.

Someone in my family was brave...or insane....and tried them. They said homemade dog cookies taste okay. They are like really bland human cookies.

Thank you for linking this up to my "Your Cozy Home Party". Hope to see you again next week!

Too cute! I like to make peanut butter cookies for my dogs and I think they prefer mine too! I'll have to post that recipe soon, thanks for the idea! I've been looking around and you've got some great ideas! I see you have Dutch Brothers are you in Oregon like me? Lastly, I LOVE the pic of your daughter "dressed for school!" I can't wait to see what mine comes up with when she reaches that age. Sigh. OK enough said. Keep up the good work!
