Sand Art

Sand Art. We've all seen it. We all love it. But have we ever "made" it? Not this family. So we thought we'd give it a try. There are lots of kits out there at various craft stores. They include a bottle and some sand. But they are around $10 or more and don't have very much stuff in the box. It's much cheaper to just buy the things individually. (At least for us it was!)

You can make your own colored sand. It's really easy. You take "regular" colored sand and put it in a jar or container. Add some food coloring and shake the heck out of it. Pour it onto newspaper or paper towels and let it dry. Pretty easy right?

Or you can go buy it. It's not very expensive and it's at most craft stores.

We bought these great bottles from Michaels Crafts. They were $3.99 for 6 bottles. There is a cork on the top and the bottom comes off (so you can put a message in it.) We glued the bottom shut so there wouldn't be any accidental sand spills all over the house.

The kids all took turns pouring in the sand. The great thing about this activity is that there is no right or wrong to how much sand you add. You can add small layers or large ones. Everyone gets to create their own design.

When the bottles are filled, let them sit for a little while. The sand will settle, which is good. You might want to carefully tap the bottle on a table to settle it even more. Why, you ask? Because you don't want to have a space at the top of the bottle. If you do and you have little ones who tend to shake everything, the layers will get all mixed up. How do I know this? Well, the one who was concentrating so hard is a shaker. She now has a multi colored bottle of sand.

Then we glued the lids on. Again, to prevent any spillage later on.

I saw these cool things at Michaels as well. They cost $1. Not too bad.

But look how cool they look!
